The Z-axis is equipped with a belt drive to avoid having to deal with Z-wobbles in the first place.<\/p>\n

Z-axes must be able to move very precisely and finely resolved. Minimal errors or layer height fluctuations are immediately visible in the print image. The forums are full of pictures of printed parts that clearly show Z artifacts.<\/p>\n

To get the resolution to the maximum possible, a pulley system and a 0.9\u00b0 stepper are used.<\/p>\n

Microsteps can be held only conditionally position-faithful, therefore the usual data of commercial products and their attainable dissolution are to be classified rather always range marketing lies\/wish thinking.
\nThe following calculation therefore only refers to the full steps of the stepper motor and therefore actually represents achievable values.<\/p>\n

Pulley GT2 – 20T = 20 teeth with 2mm distance each = effective circumference 40mm
\nOne turn of the pulley corresponds to a travel of 40 mm.<\/p>\n

Stepper motor NEMA 17 0.9\u00b0 = 400 full steps
\nThe stepper motor has a safe resolution of 400 steps per revolution.<\/p>\n

This results in: effective circumference of the pulley \/ full steps of the stepper motor
\n40mm \/ 400 full steps = 0.1mm\/full step<\/p>\n

The pulley system has a reduction ratio of 2:1.
\n0,1mm\/full step \/ 2 = 0,05mm\/full step<\/p>\n

The safe resolution of the Z-axis is 0.05mm per full step.<\/p>\n

If you now control the axis with 1\/16 microstep, you get a resolution of 0.003125mm <— Attention, marketing lie!<\/p>\n

TMC stepper drivers do their job surprisingly well and the very light Z-axis can also be moved in very small increments. Here’s the video evidence:<\/p>\n
